In February 2017, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the establishment of new rules governing artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. The European Council invited the Commission to put forward a European approach to AI by early 2018. The Commission announced to present such a concept on 25th April 2018. As the discussions have just begun, a great deal of questions still needs to be answered in this area, such as:

  • Who should be liable for defects and damages? Are our civil law liability rules still adequate?
  • Which health and safety requirements are needed?
  • How can we guarantee and verify that our data protection standards are observed?
  • How can we ensure and control that algorithms respect fundamental rights and common principles?
  • Do we need a system of registration for advanced robots?
  • At which level should regulation and control take place?
  • Is there a need for a European Agency for Robotics and AI or at least a Forum on AI?

This expert conference aims at enriching the necessary political debate ahead of the envisaged European approach by discussing these questions with representatives of the EU institutions, Member States and other stakeholders. We would be delighted if you could join us in this endeavour.
Please confirm your participation by replying to by 16th February 2018 at the latest.
